Mathieu van der Poel emerged victor from the opening day of the Giro d'Italia after an impressive display of power on the hilltop finish as Visegrád. The Alpecin-Fenix rider beat Biniam Girmay to the line, and is consequently the new leader of the overall and points classification in the race.
On the podium, he's found his closest competitor: a champagne cork which successfully attacked the Dutchman - the incident happened at the stage win celebrations.
